What You Should Know About Highway Road Signs
Today, many Americans rely on cars to get them to their workplace, home, or to other destinations. As a result, highways are becoming congested with the large amount of drivers. In order for you to be a great driver you must have the fundamental elements of driving, especially knowledge of highway road signs. Road signs have been placed in their designated locations for a purpose. They warn drivers of upcoming construction, danger, guides, points of interest, regulations, service areas, and speed limit changes.
 Stationary highway signs, also known as markers, are seen in several possible shapes: diamond, rectangle, shield-shaped, triangle, or trapezoid. Each of these shapes have a different meaning. A diamond is commonly used to signify a warning. A rectangle sign can mean two things: regulatory marker if standing on its end (shorter side at the ends) or guide if lying on its sides. A shield-shaped sign, similar to a police officer's badge, is used to mark routes and highways. A triangle can mean to yield if the triangle is positioned downward or it can mean no passing if its point is to the side. However, a recreational area is represented by a trapezoid shaped sign.
Two other types of highway signs are the portable road working sign and flashing road working sign. Both types are used many times in a construction area to warn drivers to slow down and watch for men working. More and more states are using the flashing sign because it has the capacity to be personalized to that section of the highway. For example, a flashing road sign might warn drivers of a temporary exit closing ahead.
Not only do highways signs come in different shapes they come in different colors as well. Each color like shapes represent a different meaning. For instance, yellow is used to warn, red means stop or yield, green represents a guide, blue means service area, and orange means construction. Red is also used to spell out words on signs like "No Parking."
Due to the possibility a hazard might occur on the highway, it is very important that drivers have the right information to prevent an accident. Therefore, there are a few key points to keep in mind so that you can have a safe driving experience. One thing to remember is the different shapes and colors of road signs and what they mean. Another point to bear in mind is always obey the posted construction signs, safety warning signs, regulation signs, and speed limit signs. Lastly, be aware of your surroundings. This is especially true if you are driving in the right hand lane on the highway. This is the lane that a number of cars will be entering and exiting the interstate.
